Physicians warn that between 30% and 50% of geriatric patients experience falls in their homes. This can be a distressing thought, especially if a senior citizen lives alone. Unfortunately, many seniors do not desire to be remanded to nursing homes in light of this statistic; their independence is a valued asset. So how does one ensure that elderly individuals will be guaranteed help if this type of situation were to occur? Many physicians recommend elderly alarms for geriatric patients in order to provide peace of mind to loved ones as well as the patients themselves. Elderly alarms are simply an emergency alert for seniors. In general terms, elderly alarms can be regarded as panic buttons. Geriatric patients are advised to wear the small, compact alarm either around their necks or on their wrists. This allows for immediate access. In the event of an emergency, seniors are to simply press the button located on front of the alarm system and this will automatically connect them to a centralized dispatch center. A trained agent will ascertain the nature of the call, and will determine if they are able to assist them during the call, all while providing a calming voice on the other end. If further services are needed, the agent will in turn contact the necessary help, be it Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the police, or a family member. Also, it is important to note that if the button is pressed and there is no voice confirmation from the senior, the agent is trained to dispatch emergency services to the home as an added precaution. These small emergency devices are advantageous for both senior citizens as well as their family members, because it allows seniors the ability to confidently maintain their independence as well as taking comfort in knowing that if they end up in a precarious situation, help is just a button click away. Not only can seniors enjoy their normal activities at home with added peace of mind, they can also take comfort when traveling. Wherever the patient goes, so goes the alarm system.
